Public Practice: Our Impact in 2024
Public Practice works in partnership with local authorities and the private and third sectors to grow the capacity, skills, and diversity of public sector placemaking teams. We are building the public sector’s capability to improve the quality, equality, and sustainability of places across the UK.

Recruiting People
In 2024, Public Practice continued its mission of empowering local government placemaking teams with diverse and skilled professionals. Despite the challenges facing local authorities, our key recruitment achievements in 2024 included:
- 850 applications for the Associate Programme.
- 46 new Associates placed across 29 Authorities, including 10 new partners.
- 90% of Associates are considering a long-term career in the public sector.
- 74% of Alums are still working in the public sector two years after their placements.
- Our newly launched Jobs Board received over 3,000 impressions per ‘Premium’ role.

Improving ways of working
Our work is not just about numbers – here are two impactful stories from our Associate placements:
Shoko’s Story
Shoko, a Senior Infrastructure Planner, developed an innovative infrastructure monitoring dashboard using Power BI. This tool enabled better coordination, governance, and monitoring of infrastructure projects, improving decision-making and efficiency within her team.
Beth’s Story
Beth, a Senior Urban Design Officer, streamlined urban design processes through training, improved decision-making, and created frameworks that allowed her team to focus on strategic planning rather than minor administrative tasks.
Sharing and Celebrating
Public Practice continues to share expertise and best practices through research, events, and advisory services:
- Launched Public Notice, an annual magazine celebrating public sector placemaking.
- Hosted four field trips attended by 100 officers across Somerset, York, Norwich, and Dorset.
- Delivered a keynote session at the 2024 UK Real Estate Investment & Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF).

We are proud to have been highly commended as a Diversity Pioneer at the 2024 NatWest SE100 Awards. This recognition reflects our commitment to building a diverse, inclusive, and skilled workforce across the public sector.
